Island Peak Climbing
Island (ImjaTse) Peak is one of the most popular peaks of the Everest Region. It is situated in Imja Valley at an altitude of 6,160 meters from sea level. It is also known by the name of Island Peak. Island Peak was named by Eric Shiptons party in 1953, as the peak resembles an island in a sea of ice when viewed form Dingboche. Afterwards, in 1983, the peak was renamed to Imja Tse but Island Peak still remains a popular name among climbers. In 1953 the British Everest Expedition team climbed Island Peak for the first time as a training exercise in preparation for Mount Everest. Tenzing Norgay, the first to summit Everest, was also one of the members on this first ascent team.
The Island Peak climbing trip is a special trek, which combines an ascent of Island Peak with a visit to the famous tranquil Gokyo Lake or Everest Base Camp. EBC and Gokyo Ri offers fantastic views of many mountains including top of the world, Mt. Everest, and others such as Makalu, Mt. Cho Oyu, and Lhotse (over 8,000m). Across the Cho La Pass, one descends to Dingboche to prepare for the ascent to Island Peak. Island Peak is located between Lhotse and the lateral moraine of the Imja Glacier on an extension of Lhotse Shar. A well acclimated party in good physical condition can make the summit and return to the base camp in a day. However, most of the climbers prefer to camp in High Camp, which adds the joy of camping and helps with a safe ascent. The final ridge is a classic of its kind and, from the summit, you can enjoy fabulous views of many giants Himalayan including the immense south face of Lhotse (8,501m), Nuptse (7,879m), Lhotse Middle Peak (8,410m) and Lhotse Shar (8,383m) which make a semi-circle in the north. The view of Makalu (8,475m) in the east, the huge peak of Amadablam and Baruntse in the south adds more charm for during Island Peak Climbing. Imja Tse is not only offering an enjoyable climb but also provides some of the most spectacular Himalayan scenery of the Khumbu region.
Our Island Peak climbing trip will end at the Lukla airstrip, descending through the traditional trade center Namche Bazaar. We at Gorkha Adventure are glad to design your Island Peak Climbing with professionally experienced climbing Local Sherpa guide and expert staff for your complete experience.
